Solar Power In Ypsi-- Come Learn More!


Great friend & volunteer to Growing Hope Dave Strenski is giving a talk on Wednesday, January 24 at 7 pm at the Ypsi District Library (Whittaker Road). "Solar Power in Ypsilanti: Is It Right For You?" will take you the nuts & bolts of the 2005 project to install solar photovoltaics at the Ypsi Food Co-op.

GH Volunteer Update 1/9/07

Hi Everyone…

Happy belated New Year to those we haven’t seen, and hopefully you were able to enjoy the sunshine while we had it… Over the next several weeks we’ll be gearing up for the spring so keep an eye out for new announcements and calls for volunteers on the blog (www.growinghope.net/blog).

A BIG thank-you to all the great volunteers that made it out this past Friday to build and paint Rain Barrels and Worm Bins – we all learned a bit from each other and made some pretty snazzy looking Rain Barrels if I do say so myself!

Have you volunteered at a GH Rain Barrel or Worm Bin Build and feel like sharing what you’ve learned with others? Maybe you’d just like to get another try, or work with us to improve or tweek our designs? Here’s your chance! Over the next several weeks Growing Hope will be helping local classrooms build and learn about their very own bins and barrels. We are looking for a few good volunteers that would like to join us as assistants in these demonstrations/builds – interested?

Growing Hope is still taking orders for hand-crafted (by us!) rain barrels (sliding scale $40-$80) & worm bins (sliding scale $25-$40)-- so get in touch if you want to reserve one. You can also come by the Growing Hope office any weekday from 10:30-5:30 (or call to arrange another time) to buy your Growing Hope gear.

Cookbooks, GH DVDs, music videos…hmmmm

We’re open to suggestions and looking for creative volunteers who want to share their talents. Maybe you’d like to collect recipes and create a GH gardener’s cookbook, how about creating a DVD of photos and interviews to document gardens and programs, or putting together a snazzy music video to remember the season. We know our volunteers are full of talents beyond wielding shovels and hand tools – so let us know! The season is coming for all those indoor projects and we love to work on some together… Please email Karen@growinghope.net with interest and ideas.

Rain Barrel and Worm Bin Build 1/5/07

Join Growing Hope staff, area youth volunteers, and fellow community members THIS FRIDAY to learn about, build and decorate RAIN BARRELS AND WORM BINS for area gardens and gardeners. No experience necessary - but to those of you that know a bit about either barrels or bins we'd love to have you!

Here are the most important details of the day - please don't hesitate to
call or email any other questions.

Date/Time: Friday 1/5/07 from 9am-3pm (traveling YMCA youth will be with us from 10-2)

Location: Parkridge Community Center, 591 Armstrong, Ypsilanti

Tasks: Building and decorating Rain Barrels and Worm bins for local
gardens and gardeners (see attached Rain Barrel Directions for more info)

Directions:

From Downtown Ypsilanti:
+Take Hamilton (at the Key Bank intersection) south.
+Turn right onto Harriet, pass the Perry School, on your left and turn
left onto Armstrong (after the blinking light at Burton Ct.) You should
see the the brick community center on your left.

From I-94:
+Take the Huron St. Exit and head north on Huron. At the light turn left
onto Harriet/Spring.
+Follow Harriet past the blinking light at Burton Ct. and turn left onto
Armstrong Dr. You should see the the brick community center on your left.

To Bring:
Snack, clothes you don't mind getting dirty (or a paint shirt)

If you have them...bring:
safety goggles, corded or cordless drills or jigsaws (call if you have
questions)

p.s. - rain barrels and worm bins will be for sale on Friday as well...
buy one and you can paint it anyway you'd like, haha
