How do I know if the Raised Bed Vegetable Garden Program is a good fit for me?

"How do I know if this program is a good fit for me?"

There are 3 primary things to consider before applying for this program:

#1 - Do you have the physical space, ability, time and motivation to garden this year?  Do you live within 10 miles of Ypsilanti,  MI?

#2 - Do you qualify as low income for the purposes of this program?

#3 - Are you able to commit to helping us measure the impact of this program to help it continue for years to come and come to a class this season?

Please read below to see if YOU should apply for 2012 so we can help you get growing!

A link to the application is below.

#1 - If the answer is "yes" to the following, keep going.  Do you...?

  • Have outdoor physical space at your home or apartment with at least 6 hours of sunlight for 3 garden beds that are 4 feet by 4 feet each (a total of 48 square feet of space)?
  • Own your home or have permission from your landlord to garden this year on the property?
  • Live within 10 miles of the Growing Hope Center (922 W. Michigan Ave, Ypsilanti)?
  • Feel excited about growing food this season in a garden at your home and expect to devote regular time (1-2 hours/week) from May-October to tending it?  (Gardening will be your responsibility)
  • Think you are able to garden in beds that are 8 inches tall?

#2 - Are you income-qualifying for this program?  (please note: our income guidelines changed in early May 2011)

You must be in a household that:

  • Is currently receiving assistance through participation in EBT/SNAP, Medicaid, Disability, WIC, TANF or Project Fresh
  • If not, have you used a food pantry in the past year?

OR a houshold of...

*If you think you are low income, but do not meet any of the above characteristics- you may still be eligible and you should apply for the program.

If you think you are income-qualifying for this program, continue on...

  • Weigh what gets harvested from your garden beds, and report back monthly to Growing Hope
  • Grow edible plants (vegetables and herbs) in the garden beds this year.
