Seed Starting Squad

Always wanted to grow your own seedlings but never knew how? 

The Seed Starting Squad provides the knowledge and resources for participating  community members to raise healthy seedlings for Growing Hope's spring programs and for themselves.  It's a great way to get involved early in the season and get your hands in the dirt while there's still snow falling outside!

Here's how it works: Growing Hope will sell or loan you a light stand-- an A-frame wooden structure that will hold two four-foot shop lamps.  We include the stand, lights, and bulbs and you can purchase on a sliding scale from $55-$100; we have a limited quantity available to borrow.  The light stand will hold four flats for seedlings-- you agree to grow two flats for us (we provide the flats, soil, and seeds) and then you have room for two flats for yourself.  You sign up for an orientation and to pick up your stand and flats, and once your seedlings are well on their way, you bring them back to us.  It's a community effort to grow veggie & herb seedlings that we plant at the Growing Hope Center, distribute for free to low-income families, and sell as our spring fundraiser.  And, it helps you get growing, too!  

Light stand orientation days are in February and March, and we're just about full.  You can still apply and if we need extra support we'll get in touch!  We also need LOTS of hands on deck once these seedlings return in mid-April transplanting, watering, and caring for the seedlings, so head to our Volunteer Application and let us know you'd like to help out!
