After-School & Summer Programs

Seed 2 Plate:  Students at East and West Middle Schools in Ypsilanti have the opportunity to participate in the Seed 2 Plate after school program. Students learn about nutrition and healthy eating through hands on gardening and cooking activities.

At East Middle School, students have the opportunity to learn the art of healthy cooking in a full kitchen as well as gain experience working in a greenhouse which sits in their school courtyard. West Middle School’s greenhouse is temporarily down due to construction, but students can get their hands dirty in the community garden which sits on school grounds. We believe that healthy eating begins with fun, and Seed 2 Plate serves as a rich and interactive setting for kids to learn the joys of cooking and gardening.

West Willow Garden Summer Camp: In collaboration with the West Willow Community Garden, we work with neighborhood youth & adult mentors to run a nutrition-based garden summer camp for kids.

Roots & Shoots: Our longest-running program, Roots & Shoots brings middle and high schoolers together to learn about nutrition, gardening, entrepreneurism, and leadership in a summer program in which they launch garden-based businesses.  Our 2008 crew designed and marketed an herbal hand balm at the Downtown Ypsilanti Farmers' Market.  We're currently integrating Roots & Shoots curricula into other programs.
